Lauren Bacall, 1954

Here, Baron's dramatic image of American actress Lauren Bacall has been restored. Shot on unstable diacetate film, it presented a major conservation challenge as this type of negative can literally begin to break (the acetate undergoes a chemical change starting the formation of acetic acid, which results in the eventual distortion of the emulsion layer).

This negative was in a reticulated state.

After several hours in butanone solution, the negative is barely recognizable as the layers separate and the emulsion floats free of its protective layers. The image-bearing emulsion is transferred to a glass plate and is ready to be printed once more.

This flawless image is the result of many hours of meticulous conservation work.
