"The photographers will shoot the finish, take the card out, and load it into the laptop where the images are captioned, and brightness and contrast adjusted. They transmit immediately to the editor who relays them to our local picture desk, set up for the Olympics. You can move the image as quick as you like from the photographer to the editor but at some point someone's got to edit, crop, correct and caption, and that's the time consuming bit. That's all the editors and wire techs do all day for two weeks. They really move images quickly. At the finish of the 100m, we should have pictures on news desks before the winner's halfway through their lap of honor. My first Olympics was Nagano '98 where we had a full darkroom and also we hand processed negatives onsite. Now we're completely digital the working day has shifted. You're not spending time processing anymore. We've gone from being chemists and photographers to electronic media." |
