Painter Andrew Wyeth, Chadds Ford, PA, December 2, 1976. 1949044, Arnold Newman
GI: One of your portraits of the artist Andrew Wyeth shows him on his farm and he's lying in a field on his side. The way he's posed and the setting is reminiscent of Wyeth's painting Christina's World.

AN: Just like with Grandma Moses, I was showing him in the context of his work. I know Andy very well. I photographed him in the field because he painted out there. The idea was to use all the kinds of objects -- barns, trees and expanses of grass -- that Andy used.

GI: What's coming through in those photos, then, is how well you know him?

AN: Well, not only him personally, but his work.
