Art Director Alexy Brodovitch, New York, June 10, 1946. 1944951, Arnold Newman
AN: During the Depression, I got a scholarship to study art at the University of Miami. After two years the money ran out. A family friend offered me a job in a department store photography studio in Philadelphia, where people had inexpensive portraits done -- 49 cents was the beginning price for a portrait. I took it, thinking I would take art lessons at night.

I had a boyhood friend living in Philadelphia who was a photographer. Through him I met everybody who was studying under the great (Alexy) Brodovitch, the art director at Harper's Bazaar. They'd go out taking pictures all night. I borrowed a camera from my uncle and started taking pictures.
