Each year, Getty Images awards five individual photojournalists grants of $20,000 each to enable them to pursue projects of personal and journalistic significance. More than a monetary award, the grants provide photographers with the creative freedom and collaborative editorial support necessary to produce documentary features that raise the bar for visual excellence, as well as an opportunity to bring their images to the editorial market through gettyimages.com.

Grant recipients are selected twice a year – two in February and three in September – by a panel of independent judges who themselves are photojournalists and industry experts. The judges evaluate the anonymous applicant’s ability to execute his or her proposed documentary, taking into account the caliber of portfolio, the proposal, project merit and journalistic integrity. Each judge develops a shortlist of top submissions. They then meet to collaborate in determining the grant recipients.

Once selected, each grant recipient has nine months to complete his or her project, working alongside a team of Getty Images photo editors for support in the execution of the particular project. Grant recipients are given the opportunity to sign a one-year exclusive-rights deal with Getty Images to market their work through gettyimages.com, providing the photographers with worldwide exposure and additional financial benefit. As a fundamental principle of the grant program, the photographers will always retain copyright to their grants project work.

In addition, after the judging process is complete, Getty Images will provide information about the applicants to the independent judges, should they choose to follow up with the applicants for future opportunities.

We invite you to explore the exceptional work done by our current and past winners.

Be inspired. Be challenged. Be provoked. Open your eyes to a new standard in photojournalism.
