Winning Project:
Russia's Walking Wounded
Simon Roberts' "Russia's Walking Wounded" will focus on the war in Chechnya, which is currently Europe's longest running conflict and is still one of the most under-reported. Roberts will highlight the injustices of the Chechen conflict and the wider issue of a Russian army in crisis, from the unusual perspective of the Russian soldiers and their families.

Simon Roberts (born 1974 in South London), began his professional photography career in 1997 after gaining a B.A. Hons degree in Human Geography from Sheffield University, followed by a Distinction in Photojournalism from the National Union for the Training of Journalists.

To date Roberts has carried out projects in Ukraine, Chechnya, America, Sub-Saharan Africa, Israel and Palestine. These projects examine diverse issues, from Leprosy and HIV/Aids in Zimbabwe and secret duelling fraternities in German Universities to clandestine gatherings of pyro-maniacs in the Nevada desert and the resurgence of old communist holiday resorts on the Crimea.

Roberts' work has been published widely in the national and international press including major photo stories for Time, Granta, Details, Guardian Weekend, Sunday Times Magazine, Esquire, Der Spiegel and Le Monde 2.

Among many awards, Roberts has won the Sunday Times Magazine 'Ian Parry Award' in 1998. As a student he attended the prestigious World Press Joop Swart Masterclass in Amsterdam in 2003, and was identified by Photo District News as one of their 'Emerging Artists' in 2004. In 2006, he won the 'Bright Spark Award' from the Magenta Foundation in Toronto and received an honorable mention from the Alexia Foundation and the National Press Photographers Association 'Photojournalist of the Year Award'.

Roberts has recently returned from a year's journey across Russia where he was working on a book. Motherland will be published in Spring 2007. He is represented by The Photographers' Gallery in London.
