The Pitch
"INDIAN STEPS" is intended to raise an awareness of nature and the ever fluctuating world in which we live and construct around us. It is to remind ourselves that without borders there is still life and that no man owns the land, sea or sky. The title Indian Steps comes from a rock formation that as a child I believed were steps carved out by Chief Guyasuta to help him traverse the dynamic landscape in and around Pittsburgh, PA. As an adult I now know that these interesting steps were in fact built long after Chief Guyasuta's time by the parks commission to cover up a new sewer line that ran into the valley below, dumping sewage into the stream. It was this deception, this fiction, this post applied fabrication of the truth and history of Indian Anglo relations in and around Pittsburgh that is echoed in many of man¹s constructs today. Many years later we are still covering up the facts, the mistakes we make and the harm we cause to each other and the ecosystem in which we live. Fictitious boundaries are considered fact by man and fiction by nature. In Indian Steps the two birds representing nature and the planes symbolizing man demonstrate this ongoing struggle over territory and the earth itself. Our aim is to create a hybrid narrative film using stock footage (provided by Getty Images) and CG in such as way as to blur the boundry between what is film and what is computer generated. This seems to be an untapped area for Getty since this type of work is usually done in a highly controlled live action environment so as to achieve perfect tracking between all the elements in a shot. Our challenge is to show that the high end production value and custom aesthetic and narrative of "Indian Steps" can in fact be created using stock imagery and film along with creative digital techniques created at TRONIC.
